Expert Oriental Rug Cleaning in Knoxville
At Carr’s, we are on a life-long quest to understand all we can about Oriental area rugs. Not only do we clean them, but we do our best to learn how they are made and how they are soiled in order to provide an unsurpassed level of cleaning. Additionally, we professionally dust, wash, rinse, and dry several types of rugs such as Karastans, Belgians, Wiltons, Axministers, hand-tufted, wool, and many more.
Professional Cleaning Services since 1984
Our Professional Rug Cleaning Service
We begin with a 46-point inspection that documents pre-existing conditions and notes any repairs that may be needed. We also digitally photograph and archive images of your rug for your protection.
Oriental and wool rugs can hold several pounds of dirt and dust that is not easy to remove. We employ a dual-step process to remove dry soil from your rugs. First, the rugs are placed in a Tumble Duster which dislodges the deeply embedded soil. Next, the rug is moved to our Dusting Deck where we use an industrial air compressor and a specially designed air wand to remove any remaining dry soil from the front and back of the rug.
Using our Star Paddle Wheel Wash Tub, we thoroughly wash your Oriental and area rugs. This European-designed machine uses the slow turning of the paddlewheel for a prescribed amount of time to remove soluble soils. Combined with our color stabilizing agents and botanical detergents, this method of handmade and wool rug cleaning produces exceptional results. It will leave your rugs feeling soft and smelling fresh and clean. (Complete pet urine decontamination is achieved by pre-treating and soaking with specialized cleaning agents prior to placing in the wash tub.)
Note: Due to construction and dye methods, some rugs may not be safely submerged for washing. For these reasons, after the dusting process, alternative methods of cleaning will be employed on these rugs.
After washing, the rugs are rinsed by placing them in our custom-built centrifuge. Working much like the spin cycle in a home washing machine, the cylinder spins at an incredible 900 RPM wringing out the water, all final traces of cleaning agents, and any suspended soils.
For the final phase of drying, most of the rugs are hung to dry in an environmentally controlled room. Airflow, heat, and dehumidification provide the perfect habitat for proper drying.
After drying is complete, the rugs are rolled out, fringes are combed, and any necessary touch-ups are made. If you requested treatments such as soil and stain protectors or moth and insect repellents, we apply them at this time. Finally, we roll and shelve the rugs, and then call you to let you know they are ready.

6 Misconceptions about Rug Cleaning
Dirt is abrasive like sandpaper, and every time you step and grind dirt into the wool (or silk) fibers of your rugs, you are causing damage. For some reason, a myth has emerged in the US that cleaning rugs is bad for them, and this simply is not true. Removing the abrasive dirt from rugs is one of the best ways to ensure your rug has a long life. Cleaning is not bad for your rugs. Bad cleaners are what’s bad for your rugs.
All area rug cleaning plants clean rugs with water. Virtually all wool rugs have been washed prior to ending up in a showroom. Using water is not an issue when cleaning wool rugs, but quick and proper drying is critical.
This is not a good idea. If Oriental and area rugs are cleaned in your home, it could result in the following:
- As the rugs become wet during the cleaning process, the foundation will not dry quickly enough, resulting in mildew growth and bleeding dyes.
- Area rug fringe cannot be properly cleaned.
- The vast majority of dirt in a rug is dry particulate sandy soils, and none of that can be properly removed during in-home cleaning.
While these products can be partially effective, they cannot completely wash out these types of contaminants. During in-plant area rug cleaning, we can guarantee odor removal because we are washing it out of the rug.
Many companies that advertise rug cleaning do not do the work themselves. It’s important to find out who is cleaning your rugs and if they are cleaning them properly. We welcome you to visit our plant any time.
Insurance companies insure rug cleaning companies differently depending on the cleaning processes and the facilities. As a professional rug cleaning service, we are fully insured to pick up, clean, store and deliver your area rugs back to you.
