Moving a Rug? Learn the Trusted Dealer Fold Technique

Transporting a rug can be tricky. Whether it’s a heavy Oriental rug or a family heirloom, the last thing you want is to cause damage while on the road. At Carr’s Rug Cleaning in Knoxville, we suggest folding a rug for transport using the dealer fold method, a technique trusted by rug importers worldwide. Here are our tips on how to do it yourself while protecting your rug.

Our Step-by-Step Guide to the Dealer Fold

The dealer fold method is a simple yet effective folding technique used by rug importers when shipping rugs over long distances. This method involves folding and rolling the rug a particular way to minimize creases and make it easier to transport.

1. Identify the Top and Bottom of the Rug

Determine the rug’s grain direction by brushing your hand along the pile. One direction will feel smooth (with the grain), while the other will feel rough (against the grain). The smoother direction points to the bottom end of the rug, which you’ll need for the following steps.

2. Fold the Rug

Fold the rug into thirds lengthwise, overlapping each fold. Be gentle and align the edges as closely as possible to preserve the rug's shape. Then, start from the bottom end of the rug and fold the section upward to approximately the halfway point.

3. Roll It Up

Beginning at the folded bottom end, roll the rug gently into loose, flat rolls. Avoid making the rolls too tight, and aim for squared-off edges at the start of the roll for easier stacking and transport.

More to Consider

Before you try the dealer fold, consider the following:

  • Don’t Fold Fragile Rugs: Contemporary hand-loomed rugs from India and hand-tufted rugs can stretch or crease when folded. Also, antique rugs with stiff fibers or minor cracking in the backing should never be folded. It could cause irreparable damage.

  • It’s a Temporary Solution: The dealer fold is designed for short-term transportation, but not for long-term storage. Leaving a rug folded for extended periods can create permanent creases.
